I'm surprisingly level-headed for being a walking knot of anxiety.

Ask me anything.

Special skills include: Knowing all the "na na na nah nah nah na" parts of the Three's Company theme.

I also develop Tesseract UI for Lemmy/Sublinks

  • It does have a physical keyboard, too. Sadly can't give it much of a review given the circumstances, but it does have a good feel and seems like it would be pleasant to type on.

  • Yeah, I have a ticket in with support but haven't heard back yet. I did ask specifically about the turnaround time for a replacement. Hopefully that's a reasonable amount of time. I definitely don't want $400+ tied up until the next batch ships in September.

  • Mostly the e-ink display and the QWERTY keyboard.

By its nature, it's not great for doom scrolling, TikTok, or videos (the major time sinks with most phones). Those aren't my use-cases anyway; I'm more of a reader than a watcher so I figured this would be like a supercharged version of my Kobo (which I love) that has a physical keyboard (which I have missed terribly in smartphones).

Edit: Plus, its 4:3 e-ink display and keyboard just scream "install Termux on me!" Also planned to use it as a nice portable SSH terminal like I used to have back when smartphones had slide-out keyboards.

I'm rocking an aging Cat S22 Flip right now and have been trying to figure out what to replace it with. The Minimal Phone seemed like exactly what I wanted. Sad that it arrived DOA and am probably not going to bother replacing it; waiting weeks for something that arrives DOA is a hard thing to recover from.

  • Well, I don't even know what to say to that. Except that in Puerto Rico, a McFlurry it's called a Señor Flurry.

  • Pretty much same as you listed, actually, but with a few additions:

    Upvote:

    • Mark reply as read as long as it's not something under the no-vote/downvote criteria
    • Pity (i.e. if I don't think a post/comment deserves the downvotes it's getting)
    • I'll usually give posts to the communities I mod an upvote b/c I appreciate the contribution

    No-Vote:

    • Something I disagree with but doesn't merit a downvote
    • A post I don't like that is in a community I'm not subscribed to (i.e. when browsing /all)

    Downvote:

    • Violates the community rule where it's posted
    • Is part of some bandwagon nonsense (e.g. the moths that have polluted the feed in the last several days, beans, etc)
    • Absolutist statements/positions, especially ones that paint the world in overly broad strokes.
  • I rarely go to Walmart. This is from the local Kroger (grocery store).

  • Good. May other retailers and grocery chains follow.

I hate those things - they treat you like a thief by default. I rarely use them and prefer to wait in line for the 1-2 cashiers, but I did the other day because I only had a few bottles of water to check out, and it was unsurprisingly horrible.

Scanned and bagged all my stuff. More slowly than I'd have liked, but otherwise uneventfully. I unpocket my wallet to get my shopper's card and debit card out. "Oh no, you didn't!" the machine said as it called for backup. Cue waiting 3-4 minutes for the attendant to get to me.

The machine asked the attendant if I was stealing and showed a replay of what it assumed must be me trying some Ocean's 11 level of grand larceny. In the video? It was me getting my wallet out to pay.

Absolutely no time was saved. Nothing was more convenient, and to top it off, I was once again accused of stealing by a bathroom scale with delusions of grandeur.

  • Not blocked, but my instance is de-federated from lemmit.online entirely.

And yes, I consider all the re-post instances/bots to be spam.

  • Yeah, some are. It's just unfortunate that you frequently have to pre-order, fund a kickstarter, or roll the dice with some unknown Chinese brand that may or may not ever see a software update/3rd party ROM support. That, or they're more expensive because of the smaller production runs.

I really like the PlanetCom ones, but they're a bit pricey and have some quirks that would probably make them not a good fit for me as a daily driver. Not sure I'd want to pay those prices for a secondary device.

I did order a Minimal Phone the other day (July batch), so hopefully should have that toward the end of July/early August.

Until then, I'll keep using my Cat S22 Flip which I have grown to actually love.

  • Both of my last two laptops have internal batteries. Both of them are also fairly easy to replace. The Thinkpad is the easiest (as is usually the case), but my old Zenbook is almost as easy (just requires a very tiny torx screwdriver which I already had from my cell phone repair days).

As long as they're not glued in and otherwise a huge PITA to replace (like phones), I'm okay with internal batteries.

  • The only one I saw I kind of liked was the Titan, but it seemed a bit out of date (not sure if it gets updates, and I didn't see it listed as supported for LineageOS).

  • My genuine hope is that this puts an end of the stupid "thinness wars" and we actually see innovation in devices again. I'm beyond sick of the "tall, skinny, razor-thin rectangle" form factor.

  • AFAIK, yes. Though I haven't tried it with WPA3.

While WEP is dead, you can still use it to capture the WPA/2 handshake and run it through something like John the Ripper to try to recover the passphrase.

Admittedly, I haven't messed with it in years.

Either way, you still need a wireless adapter that's capable of promiscuous mode as well as a driver for it that supports packet injection (not sure how rare that is nowadays).

  • When I was in college, I rented a house just outside my budget and found I couldn't afford things like cable internet.

I had a wifi->ethernet bridge that was originally to connect my OG Xbox to a wifi network. I also had neighbors with Wifi using WEP encryption. An idea was born.

Was able to use aircrack-ng on my laptop to crack their WEP key in about 15 minutes. Plugged that key into my wifi->ethernet bridge, and then hooked that into my router. Bam, my whole house was online.

That worked for probably a year and a half.
