Hi, I'm sbird! I like programming and am interested in Physics. I also have a hobby of photography.

  • As some others have said, you could use a VPN like Tailscale to connect to your local network remotely. Alternatively, you could simply not deal with all the faff and only use your services locally, which is what I do with Nextcloud and Immich. Syncs when I get home but doesn't when I'm not, and I can always use Tailscale to remotely access my server if there are any issues.

  • The cool thing about SyncThing is that it's peer to peer, meaning you don't need a central server for your files to sync. They can go between your laptop and phone, for example.

Something like Funkwhale does need a server, and to talk to that server outside your local network, you need a domain name.

  • Personally I use Joplin as it's super customizable and I like sorting my notes in "notebook". I am syncing my notes with Nextcloud, but you can also use anything that's WebDAV, OneDrive (ew), or anything that uses S3 (like Backblaze)

  • lemmy.world -> An instance of "Lemmy": it's like if Reddit could be hosted by anyone in the world rather that one big server, and all these mini-servers can talk to each other! Also, Lemmy is part of the greater "Fediverse" (kind of like if Instagram users could see posts from Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube. The Fediverse is a collection of different platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, Pixelfed, Frendica, PeerTube, etc.). lemmy.world in particular is one of the larger instances of Lemmy.

lemmy.world is used like Reddit, you can create posts in "communities" (subreddit equivalent) and comment on them. There are thousands of communities on all sorts of topics (discussion, sciences, movies, games, asking questions, various hobbies, etc.)! You are also able to upvote and downvote (but there's no "algorithm" like on something like Reddit). That's the main gist of it, I think.

Perchance, after a quick search, is an AI image generator, so I don't think it has much of a connection with any of Lemmy's instances. I will say that competitions usually give you extra entries if you subscribe to their social media and such on the various platforms, so that's probably why you had to make an account on lemmy.

  • A clean reinstall would certainly ruin my dual boot (Windows loves occupying the entire drive), and I have already spent many hours waiting for the disk partitions to reshuffle and resize when reclaiming that ~180GB of space. Also, things like Tiny11, being repacked versions of Windows, could easily be compromised and have all sorts of nasty malware. Having about 87GB of space for Windows is fine right now, and since my laptop has 1TB of storage, Fedora gets over 900GB of space. Much better than the ~700GB I started with.

  • Well that was the problem, trying to use the ISO image (with both Ventoy and balenaEtcher) simply didn't work, and I was unable to reinstall Windows for god knows why. I looked at the site of balenaEtcher and apparently they don't do Windows ISOs.

  • I am not running a minecraft server, we are just playing via a LAN connection!

  • Actually, do werewolves have regenerative abilities like Wolverine? Is that why Wolverine is called that, after wolves????

  • Teeth would definitely hurt more. Another question, how slowly would a wolf teeth bullet need to be fired to not kill someone? (I remember reading something about how bullets, even those of “non-lethal” materials like rubber, can still be lethal)

  • Autocorrect can be a thing…

  • If werewolves did in fact exist and they had the ability to turn other people into werewolves through their saliva, using their spit in a gun would probably turn them into werewolves. It would be kind of like using snake venom in poison darts. I am unsure why one would want to turn someone into a werewolf though, that seems like a terrible idea for the target, the shooter, and the rest of the world.

  • If I’m reading this correctly, this is a fictional question on whether you could store werewolf spit into a dart and use it in a gun to turn people into werewolves. Autocorrect I assume

  • It’s crazy how much crap Windows preinstalls, I was able to save over 100GB just by removing unnecessary programs and files…

Also just to note, I’m very surprised that messing around with the order and size of the partitions didn’t break my computer!

  • cutting Windows down from 200GB to just 87GB gives me loads of space, nice!

  • I mentioned that I disabled hibernate with the powercfg command, so it should be deleted.

  • around 2.5GB it seems

  • Checking using Windows settings, there is a ~3GB “eSupport” folder (seems to be used to store drivers and other stuff from the laptop manufacturer) and a ~1.3GB “AdwCleaner” folder (a malwarebytes thing, is this used by Windows Defender or something?). Are those safe to delete?

Also, it seems that I had Cinebench still installed (portable, so I didn’t see it) which took about 3GB. After uninstalling that, Windows still takes up over 100GB…

  • Fair enough

  • So if you want to handle the infinity stones safely, you just need a lot of lead…
