  • I was in the upstairs bathroom at my parents' place which had a skylight you could open. I did, and half of a hornet's nest fell from it. I slammed the window shut as quick as I could and then looked down. The other half was floating in the toilet with the hornets momentarily dazed. I closed the lid and flushed. When I peeked under the lid, it was gone.

  • I don't think there is an easy answer to a question like that, as it involves a lot of individual circumstances. You did land a licence, which suggests you are not cognitively impaired to the point that driving is out of the question? Give yourself some credit. It sounds like you are on the anxiety spectrum though, as am I. Perhaps you were in the midst of a panic attack at the time of the accident?

    I think in some ways it's a noble calling to find alternatives to driving? But do it for the right reasons. If it's stage 1 on the path to becoming an agoraphobiac, fuck that. You're only 19. Don't build a cage around yourself now that you'll only realize is there when you get your standard issue midlife crisis at 40.

    My son doesn't drive, and he seems to be doing ok. He strategized to get an apartment near enough to work and amenities that he can walk most of the time, and there is also an LRT station nearby. He rideshares for anything else.

    I don't know what will happen if he ever starts a family? That could introduce some challenges, but one day at a time I guess. For my part as an empty nester at this point, I have discovered an ebike is an awesome alternative to driving the 10k to work. It saves so much money over any other option, is better for the environment, and I've even managed to shed a bit of weight. Still got the old dad bod though…

    But I think these are some of the right reasons to look at driving alternatives. Anxiety just sucks, and you'll probably still have it on an ebike or public transit. Take care of that first and then assess your options, I think?

    My dad had this brilliant idea for everyone to say "cheese" in the local language every time he took a selfie of us when we were travelling around Europe. Let's just say even though that was years ago in my childhood, I can look through that album and know instantly which photos were taken in Sweden!

  • I upgraded from a 2018 Mac Mini to an M1 Macbook Air. It was quite noticeably faster. I had a big code project at the time that took over a minute to compile on the Mini, and on the Air, it zipped through it in <20s. I think even Intel programs emulating through Rosetta were faster, which is just crazy.

    But now I'm thinking about going back to a Mini again. That M4 model sounds like it's an absolute beast!

  • lol Xcode. I miss the days of Metrowerks Codewarrior. I guess back then, the official Mac tool was some clunky shell environment. I can't even remember what it was called. But ironically, I'm more comfortable on the command line than in Xcode these days, which is not a shining endorsement for the latter.

    Automator is kind of interesting though. I've been looking at it lately and it's pretty powerful once you figure it out. Again ironically, I've been using it mostly to manage terminal sessions in their own windows, so even though it's meant for gui scripting, I'm doing sort of command line on steroids with it. :p

  • I develop software for macOS but am not a game dev. I guess one thing that comes up with my friends who are is that Apple has a proprietary graphics framework called metal that's historically not been easy to adapt to something more cross-platform like vulkan. There has been some progress on that front in terms of them providing some much-requested apis to give better feature parity with third parties, but I don't know where things stand today?

  • Oh man really? That's hilarious! I'm glad Dad didn't shell out for a big spread in there then. It was just his name and that's it.

    This reminds me a bit of that shady outfit that was promising to have a star named after you for a price. I was taking astronomy at the time and some friends asked me about it. I said NO! Don't even think about it. While there are way more stars in the Milky Way alone than there are people who have ever lived, astronomers are most certainly not in the business of naming them all. You can get a visiting comet named after you if you spot it first though.

  • I was at a used bookstore and there was this volume called the Who's Who Almanac or something to that effect. I was shocked to find my dad's name in there! He was an academic in a rather narrow discipline. I wouldn't say he was a prolific publisher or had any major discoveries under his name, but he spoke numerous languages and was well-travelled. To be fair, the book was essentially a giant list of names and didn't include bios or anything, so the bar might have been pretty low? But still…

  • I suppose Facebook, if only because it's the hardest to avoid for me. Friends, family, local businesses, charities, bands I follow, bands I play in, friggin everything is on FB and the feed is such a cesspool at this point. And the only thing that might have a snowball's chance in Hell of challenging its dominance is maybe Discord? Some of my friends seem to be spending more time there of late, and a few community groups I'm involved with have started their own too. But I dunno.

  • Yeah. I think it started when I was playing 2nd violin in a community orchestra. I'd get lost and think just keep playing and look like you know what you're doing. As long as it doesn't clash…

    Then I joined a band and they said there are no rules here. Make up whatever you want to go with the song. I was in Heaven!

    One time, I was at some kind of open mic thing and an old guy walks up, introducing himself as the official city poet laureate. (Yes, that turned out to be legit!) He started reciting a poem about a local historic event and before you know it, I was playing along. He looked at me but continued. I think it sounded vaguely like something you might hear in a Ken Burns documentary, and when he was done, he came over.

    Wow, that fit the words perfectly! What piece did you choose?

    Oh what? No I just made it up on the spot.

    Really! Could you play it again?

    Yeah, no. But if someone made a recording, I'm sure I could harmonize to it! 👍

  • I can play a spontaneous and convincing harmony on my violin to any song I hear. Sometimes I can even do this as I'm hearing a new song for the first time and trying to join in. I also suck at reading sheet music, so this could be a survival adaptation?

  • I see what you're getting at here. The solar constant is the solar constant. If you've got a perfect angle to the sun, you should be getting the same amount of power regardless of latitude. I mean I suppose it's possible there might be a slight attenuation with the sun at a lower angle due to there being more atmosphere to traverse? Otoh solar panels don't function as efficiently at high temperatures, so it's possible they may be more efficient in some cases.

    But you have to consider that averaged out, you're looking at shorter daylight hours overall at high latitudes, even if there are periods in mid-summer when days can be super long, so that's a consideration. So yes, the panels should pull in similar amounts of power while the sun is up, but it's not up as much.

  • My choirmaster years ago taught us that raising your eyebrows actually does help you reach the top of your vocal range, so that might actually be technique? Though I'm not a professional singer by any stretch, so who am I to say.

  • For me, I think it's whatever face I make when I'm in the zone. I'm not really aware of what I look like or contrive to look a certain way. But if I crack a smile, that's a pretty good tell that I goofed up somewhere.

    One time I was playing a Robbie Burns event where we were all encouraged to wear kilts. I made the mistake of putting my phone in the sporran (a kind of purse that hangs right over your crotch) and it started vibrating incessantly. I can't even imagine the faces I was making that night!

  • I suppose if some sort of critical mass is reached, it could push the world from x86-64 to arm? Every modern OS supports it at this point and emulators have come a long way for older software that needs them.
