  • I've seen less whining about downvotes, "you can't say x on y subreddit" meta comments, and general persecution fetish stuff. Probably just due to less people, but it's still a relief not to have to see it constantly.

  • Everyone's life is different. Some people spend more time working but have more opportunities for breaks, and others have shorter hours but more a clearly delineated work-life separation where they must be working through the whole period. There are people with a large amount of responsibilities outside of work, and others that have little to none.

Anyway, it's not true for all but many people do have the time they just choose to spend it on other types of entertainment. Sometimes consciously, other times because TV and social media are the path of least resistance, even if it's less satisfying.

My suggestion is to consider a Steam Deck and use the suspend function readily. You might not have hours to play, but maybe you can pick up 15 minutes here and there, which is more satisfying then you might think.

  • Well, I did say "maybe with a real d-pad", it's just the thumbsticks that aren't necessary.

I actually did play with the Steam Controller for years using the trackpad as d-pad. It was more of a comfort thing that made it less than ideal which was due to the shape/texture of the original SC, but I could live without it personally if it's done right.

I've even played shmups with it, with the right settings, but I get there is a learning curve and its easier to use a physical d-pad.

  • I run it even on a Steam Deck since there is a bit more flexibility to customise and it fixed some audio bugs I had with SteamOS (might have been fixed by now).

  • I understand the trackpads somewhat since they take up space, but the lack of back buttons is inexcusable.

Personally though, I'd buy a trackpad only deck (maybe with a real d-pad) but I know I'm in the minority on that one.

  • Smart is fine if and only if:

    • Not the only way to interact with the device
    • Supports open, local-only protocols like Zigbee or Matter
  • It's just saying it's not supported, not that it doesn't work. Depending on your country, I doubt that warranty voiding claim is enforceable either.

  • Also, if you get one of their units that has an ARM chip inside instead of an intel one, there is basically no chance you’re ever going to be able to use anything other than the software that they have by default.

Their x86 models are fine as you imply, just avoid ARM and you can install any OS you want.

  • The ZOTAC handheld looks interesting, and while it's nice to see decently sized touchpads, they are very low on the device and it seems like that would be uncomfortable to use.

A bunch of back buttons would have mitigated the issue a little, but it seems like there is only two, which is a shame.

  • It's a bit of both, along with the Linux AMD drivers being superior in many cases to the Windows drivers.

  • I'll add for completeness that vkd3d-proton handles DX12 titles, and of course OGL and Vulkan are supported natively.

  • For me, it's not the steam machine itself but the peripherals like the steam controller that would come with it. There still isn't a proper replacement for the original SC that has: trackpads, gyro, back buttons, and full steam input support.

Everything else is missing trackpads and aimed at emulating a console controller, so you get weird situations where one mode supports gyro because it emulates a switch controller but doesn't support the back buttons and analog triggers, and another supports the back buttons and analog triggers but not gyro.

Funnily enough, the steam deck itself is the best option as a controller if you want all of these features.

Of course, a new steam machine wouldn't be required for a new SC to happen, but it makes sense to pair them, as they did originally.

  • Not to mention decades of older content, and nobody could have possibly played everything good that has ever been released.

  • It differs by Western country at least as well. Australian Gen Z men for instance are shifting left, just not as quickly as women.

To be honest, the whole narrative about Gen Z is overly focused on men, and the seismic shift of Gen Z women to the left should not be ignored. But belittling and undermining the views of young women is certainly not a new thing.

  • I watched it for a while, but it just got stupider and stupider with every season. It's a very American show, and it feels like conservative pandering much of the time (even though the show runner isn't a conservative from what I hear).

  • It's mainly Linux Unplugged where that stuff leaks into it. I haven't heard it on "self hosted" very much.

  • Yes, but only for 2.4 ghz since I live in a small apartment and there's no benefit to high transmit power in those cases. 5 ghz is another story since it doesn't penetrate walls easily anyway, so no harm to others.

    • Poor infrastructure in many of these communities, and no way to get to larger towns and cities without a car. So you're stuck with crappy chain stores and terrible quality food, harming your health. And it's boring, because it can't support many kinds of entertainment.
    • Smaller communities tend to skew towards conservatives, and there's little way to escape from it (due to the distances and the lack of high speed rail). So expect more religiosity, more discrimination, and politicians that are even shittier than the average.
  • I think there is some postprocessing but yeah it uses Bing. I simply meant that SearXG uses its results (and Bing too for that matter). So it's layers all the way down.
