  • Don't let Lemmy mislead you into thinking Linux is a drop-in replacement or easy to switch to. It's a difficult process that takes learning, but hopefully you'll find it worthwhile. Good luck with your troubleshooting.

  • Lemme.ee is closing, where do I go. Only been here 12 days lol?

  • This has really made me lose faith in a defederated system like this.

@Anyone: please let me know if I'm wrong about these and if there's a solution, but as far as I can see:

    • I can't export my account (most importantly all the posts and comments I've saved).
    • It's difficult to find where a server is based.
    • Some instances seem to be solo hobby projects. I don't want to pick another instance that is at risk of being killed.
  • Talk radio station. Starts at low volume and builds up slowly. Calm voices are the most relaxed sound to wake up to. Tried all sorts of other sounds and they're all too abrasive to wake up to.

  • This feels like homework.

  • That's not the point they're making at all.

The point is when a website password ~breeds~ needs to be changed, then it won't conform to the system anymore. Now you need to make a new system, or remember this particular exception.

I had a system with a number in it. Any time a password change was needed then I would add 1 to the number. I might have to try two or the times to get the password right if I've changed it for the third time.

  • You're in the picture. You are seen.

  • It's a strength check. It takes the might of Thor to squeeze the plug enough, in a tight space, at an odd angle, behind the computer.

  • If you're looking for a "life hack" to make any exercise instantly enjoyable, then that's really not going to happen.

But you sound like you're motivated to start exercising so that's great. You can add this in layers to make this genuinely enjoyable:

    1. find something you like (for me: weight lifting and squash are fun. Running and swimming are hell)
    2. Decide on a fixed time (for me: 10pm every day is designated for exercise)
    3. Make it as simple as possible and remove as many barriers as possible (for me: I don't sit to watch TV or play video games close to exercise time, otherwise I know I'm not going to get up again. I put on exercise clothes when I get home from work so I'm already ready when the time comes).
    4. Add something else that's really enjoyable (For me: I have a TV series that I only watch when I'm in the gym. So if I want to find out what happens next, I'll have to go to the gym tomorrow.)
    5. Make this routine (once you're habituated to doing this regularly, then it stops taking will power to force yourself and is just embedded in your routine)
    6. Forgive yourself for missing sessions (any time you miss a session, it doesn't matter, you'll start making progress again any time you start exercising again)
    7. Make it social (some people love this and you can do exercise with someone. I personally hate that and I love the meditative solitude of exercise time)
  • I haven't found any. Anything of that sort would need heavy handed and laborious moderation and would lend itself to quite a lot of bias from moderators. Your best bet is to do this sort of thing locally with a small group of friends (or internet friends).

  • This is not a question for Lemmy.

Could be anything from dry eyes to glaucoma. Get it checked.

  • I agree completely and struggle with the same.

Lemmy is too small and insular. Only mainstream (politics) or echo chamber (Linux) content gets enough momentum.

Reddit was large enough that you could shun the main communities and still find enough content in really niche communities.

People also don't stick to designated communities and posts overflow to all sorts of places. I block all politics, but want to see memes. But all the meme communities are overflowing with political memes.

It's a difficult time politically too, and Lemmy (socially liberal) is very much against incumbents (conservative nationalists) in most parts of the world.

My advice would be to expect little relevant content. Use an app that let's you block things (I like Boost). Block all the communities and keywords you want (Trump, parliament, elections, Ukraine, etc etc). Ultimately cut back on social media use as it will always focus on politics. Go directly to sites that cover content you like.

  • The medical community has long since moved on from the cardiovascular definition of death.

UpToDate.com is about the only source I can be bothered mustering up for an internet disagreement at this time of night:

Death is an irreversible, biologic event that consists of permanent cessation of the critical functions of the organism as a whole [1]. This concept allows for survival of tissues in isolation, but it requires the loss of integrated function of various organ systems. Death of the brain therefore qualifies as death, as the brain is essential for integrating critical functions of the body. The equivalence of brain death with death is largely, although not universally, accepted [2,3]. Brain death implies the permanent absence of cerebral and brainstem functions.

Also this video seems to explain what I'm trying to say, although I'm not going to watch the whole thing at this hour and I only skimmed through it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5IhxRSaJ74E

  • Not having a heartbeat and not breathing doesn't mean you're dead. Intensive care departments are literally full of people with medically paralysed breathing muscles (i.e. not breathing) on ventilation machines. People go onto heart/lung bypass machines everyday to have heart surgery and their heart is stopped. You just need to keep oxygenated blood going around, keeping those tissues alive till you get the heart and breathing back online (this is what CPR is trying to do).

When the brain stem is dead tissue, then you're truly dead (but even then you can be kept "alive" artificially if you're already on a ventilation machine in a suitable intensive care).

  • There are games I have as Epic freebies, but just thought it was easier to re-buy on Steam for convenience sake on my Steam Deck.

  • Is that why I can't seem to find it on my laptop? Skill issue?

  • Ideas like this haven't come up for the first time. I expect this idea occurred to Valve and they thought it was not worth the investment of money/manpower/infrastructure.

Valve would either have to publish on Google Play. That would put it in the role of a developer and Valve is not really pushing on its developer role significantly. A huge cut off sales then goes to google.

Or Valve will have to try to make an alternative store.... And that is no small feat. Most people will not sideload apps or install other store fronts. I imagine the proportion of android game sales that Valve can get into will be tiny enthusiast communities, and that won't be anywhere near enough to pay the bills. On this alternative store, Valve will have to get developers to make games.....or again they will have to consider developing games in house to get the ball rolling. Their best bet would likely be to use their existing IP to make mobile spin-offs (DotA card game? Or a wild-rift type MOBA? CS:GO turn based tacticle game? Or try to compete with CoD for the FPS market?).

I can't see any combination of the above that seem like probable success for Valve. It's admirable that they're sticking to their niche and what they know. Pushing further into the handheld gaming and console market has been a much better option for them and they're trying hard. Even in that aspect, the Steam Deck is universally praised......and is selling roughly 2.5% as many consoles as the Nintendo Switch. And no one I know IRL knows about the Steam Deck (other than my brothers, who bought one after I told them I had pre-ordered mine).

  • If you're genuinely interested, then there are people studying and talking about this (beyond the expertise of Lemmy). There's a fantastic podcast I listen to that talks in detail and there author has written a book about how minds change. Here's a specific episode (out of many) that is relevant, but I would really recommend listening to all:
