  • Finished Nier Automata. Really loved it. I think it's one of those games that still isn't compatible with Switch 2. I don't have a Switch 2 (yet, maybe for xmas), but surely it will get fixed eventually?

  • A lot of OLEDs can't hit 400 nits, though, right? [Edit: maybe not for sustained brightness, but peak brightness they can?]

In his previous video, he said that if you don't play in a dark room, the second setting for paper white should target 250 or 300 nits instead of 200, so if you play in a lit room, you should be using more clicks for the second screen (but I don't know how many).

  • Awesome, thanks. I appreciate my budget doesn't give much to work with. I did already think about this one for a while - there are loads of 1000R out there, but I thought it might be a bit much, so would prefer a shallower curve. The AW has better ports and is probably going to have better HDR as well. It's still in the shortlist.

  • I did wonder how likely it is that the S2 would even be able to max out its display output. If MKW is 1440p @ 60, that might be the ceiling in practice (at that resolution, at least).

  • Okay, sure. Don't spend too much time on it, though, because I'm sure I'll end up happy with whatever I get.

I was planning to get this Samsung G50D for £242. My reasonable shopping list includes 32-inch screen, wide viewing angles (so probably IPS), a height-adjustable stand since I'll use it for some office work as well and might move it about, [edit: and 1440p]. Preferably I'd like to keep it below £300.

  • Awesome, thank you. All good to know. I know HDR400 is the lowest, but much of the other things I'm looking at in the same price range don't have any certification, they just support HDR10 in some way. If I could find HDR500/600 for a small price premium, I could go for it.

  • Ah, okay! Thanks. I'd still find any comments on general HDR output interesting, though.

  • I've seen ads like this for Temu (Teemu?) where they have a bunch of seemingly random products and I actually want to click it to find out what they are.

  • I was playing it with my kid as well and we really enjoyed it, even though it was me just directing them what to do for a lot of it.

I think I encountered one glitch in single player: there were three lens cubes in the room that I needed to use, and at one point I just lost one. It's possible it got fired into a dark corner of the room and I didn't see it, but I think it glitched away. Not too annoying since I just reloaded the level to do it again.

  • I'd say so, yes. Coordinating two players to do their things in the right order and getting the timing right requires a lot more thought. I did finish the single-player mode and there was one near the end that had me thinking for a bit, but there was nothing as challenging as what's in the co-op mode.

  • I finished Portal 2 co-op mode a fair while ago (and the bonus levels that I honestly could have missed entirely, because it's not really indicated that they exist) and started the single-player mode. It's fine, and I'm interested to find out the details (although it's hinted at enough that I think I can guess), but I actually feel the single-player mode is a bit too long. You're moving through the levels, but I none of them have been that challenging and in the later game (assuming I'm near the end), a lot are just too straightforward. Possibly I was spoiled by the co-op mode and I would have liked the single-player mode more if I'd done it first.

  • Oh come on, keep your expectations realistic here.

  • I'm always surprised that BotW isn't a bit higher up given how long it's been out for and the positive press it got. I guess it's not as casual as all the other games on this list (bar TotK, of course), but I thought it would still have wider appeal.

  • I didn't realise Bananza wasn't a launch title, although it's close. Gamecube didn't have a Mario or Zelda at launch. Its big first-party title was Luigi's Mansion. Not sure about handhelds, if they all had a mario at launch.

  • Yeah, I'm kind of interested in that one now. Is it more skill based than Portal 2 or is it also more of a puzzle game?

  • Really enjoyed Portal 1, and finished the co-op mode in Portal 2 today, so still got the single-player mode in Portal 2 to start on another day. I don't think I've ever actually played a multiplayer game before that required co-operation; it was things like Mario Odyssey or Kirby Forgotten Land where you can almost get through it all without the other player doing anything at all.

It's quite satisfying that I've got a bit stuck on some of the puzzles, but they are all still solvable without a guide. I think I've got into a habit in recent years of looking up a guide when I get stuck on a certain part of the game, but with Portal I really wanted to work it out on my own so didn't actually have a desire to look up the solution.

Anyone picked up something good in the Easter sale?

  • The thing that worries me here is the ones that are marked okay have passed "basic compatibility testing". What are the chances that when someone actually plays through them, something will be broken? Maybe slim, I don't know, but would there be a patch for those cases?

  • When I first saw MK World, I thought, "it's lucky I didn't get MK8 so I can get this instead", but then the main difference (besides tracks) was the open world thing, which doesn't look that appealing to me.

I'll say again how similar it is to MK on the Gamecube. Playing (a) SNES/GBA MK, (b) N64 MK, and (c) GC MK, they've three very distinctive driving feels, but with MK8, I can pick it up and all the muscle memory is there despite not playing MK for 20 years (although I haven't tried 200cc yet). It's already a near-perfect kart game, so there's not much they can do to improve it.

  • Nice. Yeah, it was only available for about 6 months.

On March 31, 2021, physical copies of 3D All-Stars were discontinued, and the game was delisted from the Nintendo eShop.

You can play Super Mario 64 on the N64 emulator, and in the future, Sunshine on the GC emulator, but being able to play Galaxy again might be a while off.
